Health and Safety FAQ: Water
How do we treat the water?
Any water that is untreated in Ladakh should be considered unsafe. However, it is relatively easy to find clean, safe drinking water in Leh. Most guesthouses and restaurants will offer boiled and filtered water. On our treks, we will have a group filter, but it is the responsibility of each participant to carry iodine or chlorine treatment (depending on your preference). Most filters alone will not be adequate in treating all microorganisms and viruses.
The khatadyn built-in water filter is a convenient, albeit more expensive option for treks. It has built in iodine treatment, ensuring all bacteria, microorganisms and viruses are killed off. We suggest just going with iodine tablets, as they are light, cheap and fairly convenient.
