Health and Safety FAQ: Food

Making YogurtIs the Food Safe?
In Leh, we stay at a wonderful, family-run guesthouse where they cook homemade vegetarian meals. They are hygienically prepared and cause for no concern. On treks and in villages, we will be bringing most supplies from Leh and either eating simple local meals or making our own mostly vegetarian meals. We like to prepare light, healthy dishes that give you a flavor of the local cuisine. If you have any dietary restrictions and/or preferences, please inform us before the trip.

You will want to avoid the following while traveling to Ladakh:

  • Drinking untreated water (this includes brushing your teeth with it)
  • Ice cubes
  • Chang (barley beer, usually made with untreated water)
  • Raw, unpeeled fruits and vegetables
  • Salad that is not washed in treated water
  • Uncooked fish
  • Uncooked or rare-cooked meat
  • Ice cream
