Who We Are
Our Approach:
The inspiration for Crossroads Himalaya was born in a yak herder’s hut in the high mountains of Ladakh. We wanted to offer something set apart and one of its kind: a unique experience of cultural immersion, while treading lightly in this enchanting pocket of the world. Our trips are adventurous and active learning journeys, where you will experience the thrill of exploration and awe for this ancient Buddhist culture and dramatic Himalayan landscape, all while making a positive contribution to the communities you visit. Proceeds from each trip will go to support grassroots initiatives working to protect the fragile environment and traditional culture of the region.
Guides:
Tashi has led trekking and mountaineering trips to Ladakh and Sikkim for several years and most recently for Vermont Intercultural Semesters, a high school semester abroad program. He is a former president of the Buddhist Association of Ladakh’s Kargil district and manager of the Lamayuru Monastery Guesthouse, one of the oldest Buddhist monasteries in Ladakh. He comes from a traditional Ladakhi Amchi (ancient healing practice) family in the remote Chiktan Valley of Ladakh and is highly respected in the Ladakhi community. As well as providing insights into Ladakhi ways and culture, he is accomplished at arranging treks, home stays, transportation and whatever is needed. He brings a wealth of country knowledge and experience in meeting the needs of visitors. Learn more about Lamayuru Monastery>
Ashley, a Vermont Intercultural Semesters during the 2005 spring semester in Ladakh, began her undergraduate studies at Middlebury College and was introduced to Himalayan cultures while studying abroad in Nepal with the School for International Training. Since graduating with a BA degree in Environmental Studies and Anthropology from The University of Vermont in 2003, she now spends a few months of every year in the Himalayan regions. Her dedication to the Himalayan peoples and landscapes, coupled with a basic grasp of the Ladakhi language, extensive trekking experience, and a Wilderness First Responder certification has led her to develop a deep understanding of the culture and knowledge of the area, that she is passionate to share with others. Her most recent interest involves working with a friend and Ladakhi filmmaker on a documentary film about Ladakh's nomadic people, to capture a way of life that is disappearing.
